This volume contains fifteen essays on the history of tournaments, based on new research by leading international experts. It is the first book to examine both the development of medieval chivalry and tournament combat, as well as the lesser-known five-hundred-year history of the sport from the Renaissance to the beginning of the 21st century. The essays in this book cover topics such as the earliest documented written rules for tournaments, the evolution of tournaments from military training to courtly festivities in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance, Baroque quintanines and horse ballets, romantic tournaments in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the modern revival of tournament sports. The essays offer a new perspective on important moments in the history of European chivalry. Some examine previously overlooked aspects of the jousting tournament, such as tournaments in Renaissance France and Hungary and the influence of tournaments on equestrian culture in the southern United States in the 19th century.
