The development of chivalry and the knight from its beginnings in the early Middle Ages to its increasing decline in importance in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The material and legal foundations of chivalry through the feudal system or the formation of a chivalric ideal in the medieval epics and chivalric novels are discussed as well as the development of weapons and armour, the different types of horses of the knights including their equipment or the special characteristics of chivalry in England, France, Germany, Italy, Scandinavia, Spain or in the Crusades.
