The author volunteered for the Waffen-SS in 1943 at the age of 16 and, as a young Führeranwärter in Panzergrenadier Regiment 2 of the 1st SS Panzer Division, took an active part in the Battle of the Bulge from autumn 1944 and in the defensive battles on the Eastern Front in Hungary in April 1945 before falling into American captivity in Austria. He suffered two serious war wounds.
But he was already politically "active" as a 7-year-old boy, when he took part in the distribution of leaflets on the occasion of the Saar referendum in his native Saarland in 1934. He experienced the return of the Saarland to the state of the German Reich in January 1935, was involved in the Jungvolk and Hitler Youth and completed a course of the Reich Labour Service on Borkum before he was called up as a volunteer for the Waffen SS in 1944.
