Volume 1: text volume; Vol. 2: illustrated volume. The two-volume war history of the 3rd SS Panzer Division "Totenkopf" begins with its formation in the autumn of 1939. The first test came in the 1940 Western campaign, where the unit gained its first experience in the battles around Holland on the edge of the Dunkirk cauldron. In the summer of 1941, the division joined the Army Group and advanced through Lithuania to northern Russia. Trapped near Demjansk in the winter of 1941/42, the division held out with heavy losses until it was relieved. It was then redeployed to France, from where it was transferred to the southern section of the Eastern Front in January 1943, where it took part in the recapture of Kharkov in March. Further stations were the attack in the Kursk Arc in the summer of 1943, fighting on the Mius and the Dnieper in the autumn, in 1944 the defensive battle east of Warsaw and near Modlin, and in 1945 participation in the last German offensive operation at Lake Balaton.
