The Battle of the Nations at Leipzig was an event of world historical significance. Napoleon had also initiated significant reforms in Germany. At the same time, however, he had forced the Germans under the yoke of foreign rule, which was then broken in the Battle of the Nations. In his book, Gerd Fesser begins by showing Napoleon at the zenith of his power and then outlines his debacle in Russia, the deed of General Yorck at Tauroggen and Prussia's departure from Breslau for the war of liberation. He then describes the armies of 1813 and the spring and autumn campaigns of that year. The account of the Battle of the Nations forms the core of the volume. This is followed by documents on the Battle of the Nations, a chapter on the contradictory reception history and an informative "Small Encyclopaedia of the Wars of Liberation". Gerd Fesser describes the events of 1813 vividly, excitingly and in fluent language.
