The winter of 1812, and with it Napoleon's disastrous campaign in the vast expanses of Russia, has finally come to an end. It cost thousands their lives and their health, with the remnants dragging themselves home broken and scarred for life. In order to hold on to his empire and save the crown, the emperor once again called new recruits - conscripts in the parlance of the time - to the colours. The young Alsatian Joseph Bertha was called up with the last contingent and had to leave his home, his job and his sweetheart in order to risk and perhaps give everything for Napoleon and his idea of a united Europe under French leadership in Saxony. A simple soldier who has to bear the oppressive burden of war. A classic by Emile Erckmann (*1822; d.1899) from the year 186, which has lost none of its urgency at the beginning of the 21st century.
