Joseph Bertha, already known from the first volume "Geschichte eines 1813 Konskribierten", spent the time up to the spring of 1815 as a journeyman watchmaker in tranquil Alsace. Here, the young husband now witnesses the Restoration under Louis XVIII, the return of the emigrants who had fled since the beginning of the Revolution and the attempt to restore the old order. Republicans, Bonapartists and the veterans of the imperial army who had been released on half pay opposed this and led France to the brink of civil war. In March 1815, the abdicated Emperor Napoleon escapes from his exile on the island of Elba and returns to Paris in triumph. The Allies declare war on him and Bertha, who has to leave his young wife and unborn child behind, is once again forced to fight for the aims and ideals of others. In the summer campaign that follows, he will experience and survive the privations, hardships and suffering of the battlefields of Ligny and Waterloo. A classic by Emile Erckmann (*1822; d.1899) from 1865, which has been reissued at the beginning of the 21st century and has lost none of its poignancy.
