Over one million people were murdered in Auschwitz, most of them Jews. For three and a half years Rudolf Höß commanded this largest extermination camp of the Third Reich and, as Himmler's aide, implemented the planned "Final Solution of the Jewish Question": From 1942 he began the systematic murder of people with the poison gas Zyklon B and boasted that poison gas was a "sensible""and "hygienic" improvement to mass murder. Höß was authority-hungry, ambitious and mentally numb. He obeyed orders blindly and unconditionally; a sense of injustice was alien to him. His zeal for service in issuing and carrying out inhuman orders contrasts with his self-perception in his "Autobiographical Notes", in which he describes himself as a thoroughly sensitive person. After the end of the war, Höß was sentenced to death by the Polish Supreme People's Court and hanged in April 1947 in front of his former service villa on the Auschwitz camp grounds. This book corrects a multitude of the concentration camp commandant's life lies.
