Europe 14th/15th century When riding in armour, the knight did not sit in the saddle but stood in the stirrups, additionally supported by the high front and back of the heavy saddle. Only in this posture could he use his weapons, the almost 4 m long lance, the sword, the mace or the battle axe. (Weapons such as crossbows or bows were considered "unknightly" in battle and were purely hunting weapons for the knight). The heavy, large horses, the "war horses", were trained to a light, soft gallop or even to a passing gait in order to soften the unbearably hard blows for the armoured rider. Often the steeds themselves were armoured. Our series shows knights and standard bearers trotting. The unity of an attack was achieved by riding up through walk, trot and gallop. The natural group behaviour of the horses was exploited.
