Europe 14th/15th century The knight's charge, which had tremendous force, was the main tactical strength of these heavy horsemen. To attack, the knight galloped towards the opponent with his lance inserted and tried to throw him out of the saddle with the impact. The latter, of course, tried to do the same, and in addition he let the enemy's lance slide off with the help of his shield if possible. The lance could also slide off the ball-shaped breastplate. A lance thrust, if it hit full on, almost always resulted in serious internal injuries, even if it did not penetrate the armour. After the knight had "broken his lance", the fight was continued in the melee with the sword or another knight's weapon.
