The knightly phalanx has set in motion, with raised lances and waving banners they approach the enemy. The battle of Sempach in the canton of Lucerne took place on 9 July 1386. In the history of Switzerland, it is considered the climax of the conflict between the Habsburgs and the Confederates during the Swiss-Habsburg Wars. The victory strengthened the Confederation and decisively changed the balance of power in the Swiss Mittelland in favour of the Confederates. The battle is considered exemplary for the medieval battle order of the Gevierthaufen. It is also the birth of the heroic legend of Arnold von Winkelried, who is sung about in the Sempach battle song. He is said to have thrown himself into the spears of the enemy in order to open a breach for the Confederate attack. (Source: Wikipedia).
The figures are also appropriate for many battles of this era (e.g. Battle of Tannenberg (Grunwald)1410).
