The saga of a group of Lakota who fight in vain for their hunting grounds and ultimately flee to Canada. The story centers on Tschetan-withko, a grim Lakota warrior who, under extraordinary circumstances, abducts a Crow woman and her baby. The winter of 1870/71 is harsh, and food is scarce. Wah-bo-sehns, a young Crow woman, mourns her husband when her village is attacked by a group of Lakota (Sioux). She and her child fall into enemy hands, facing an uncertain future with fear. But Tschetan-withko, as lonely as she is, takes her as his wife and adopts the little girl. This book tells the story of a group of Lakota during the final stages of their people's War of Independence. It recounts their daily lives, their love and hate, their powerlessness and their struggle. After the Battle of Little Bighorn, the Native Americans were relentlessly hunted, and the group led by Tschetan-withko and Wah-bo-sehns retreated to Canada in the dead of winter, enduring inhuman hardship and suffering heavy losses. The women and their children, in particular, fell victim to a campaign of extermination waged by the white soldiers.
