Description
During the first flight of the prototype in 1935, surely no one could have imagined the great success of the Douglas DC-3. After the Second World War, the military version, the C-47, virtually symbolised the Allied landings in Normandy and from 1944 it also flew under the cockade of France. 300 "Dakotas" flew for the French Air Force and Navy for 40 years. This period of French military aviation history is detailed in this volume.
The C-47s were to experience the Indochina conflict and the hell of Dien Bien Phu as protagonists. They were used in Africa and were a familiar sight in the skies of many French possessions around the globe. In France, they were also used to train French military pilots and the French Navy also used the C-47. Unpublished testimonies illustrate the C-47's missions and bring their missions to life. Many "Dakotas" were withdrawn from service over time and sold to other countries or airlines. Some were equipped with turbines. The "life" of each of the aircraft that served with the French armed forces is traced. Some are still flying today and their story has no end.
