To this day, Friedrich Paulus (1890-1957) is one of the best-known, but also most controversial, army commanders of the Second World War. This biography is the first complete account of Paulus' life - before Stalingrad and after. It traces an illustrious career that took Paulus to the centre of the Army High Command before he took over the 6th Army in 1942. His equally controversial stance in captivity - he broke with Hitler in 1944, put himself at the disposal of Soviet propaganda and appeared as a witness for the prosecution at the Nuremberg trial - is given its own chapter, as is his return to Germany, to the GDR, into whose service he allowed himself to be placed and from which he hoped for the reunification of Germany - a period of his life that has remained widely unknown to this day. The author dispels many prejudices and provides insight into the thoughts, feelings and actions of a man who helped write German history and became a tragic figure in the process.
