The M24 Chaffee was the first really effective light tank to appear in WWII, it was fast, reliable and had the firepower of the M4 Sherman Medium Tank. But unfortunately it only entered service as the war ended with only 4,731 tanks completed by Cadillac and Massey-Harris. The M24 was not significantly modified by the US Army, but post-war tanks were fitted with improved tracks. When the war in Korea started in 1950 the only allied tanks available were a few M24's stationed there. But they soldiered on until heavier M4 and M26 tanks arrived. The French used the M24 in Indo-China and Algeria and Pakistan used the M24 in the 1971 war with India. Small numbers of M24's were used by many countries including Italy, Japan, Denmark, Norway, Taiwan, Netherlands, Greece, Laos and South Vietnam, in all 28 countries used the M24. In US Army service the M24 was replaced by the M41 Walker Bulldog from 1951, with the last examples being retired in 1953.
