In 1935 the German Army issued a requirement for an Amphibious Tractor and light weight tug to assist in river crossings. Rhinemetal-Borsig undertook the design and produced a boat with tracked running gear and two rear propellers. By 1940 three vehicles, now known as the LWS, had entered service and were assigned to Tank Detachment 100 for Operation Sea lion, the invasion of England. Their intended roll was as a tug for un-powered barges and to assist in tank landings. The vehicle was moderately successful, though the invasion was abandoned after the Luftwaffe lost the Battle Of Britain and failed achieve air superiority over the English Chanel. The early LWS was recognized by its large civilian style picture windows and three small funnels. Later vehicles built after 1940 had the size of the windows reduced, and used a single large funnel.
