If a historian had wanted to celebrate what was once Europe's greatest land power, Austria-Hungary, he certainly would not have chosen the terrible year of 1809. What could have been the beginning of a great military reform and an incomparable triumph for the military administration in Vienna and the Generalissimo Archduke Charles turned into one of the greatest catastrophes in the history of the Habsburg Empire. Austria disappeared from the scene of European politics after a series of unfortunate events and wrong military decisions. It lost important territories and, perhaps more importantly, its powerful armies. The author will report on this period and explain the organisation of the Austrian army, from recruitment methods to various details concerning the different units. After all, until the First World War, this army was the largest force Austria had ever possessed. German translation of the title "The Austrian Army 1805-1809".
