In this autobiography, US-born Theodore Walling recounts his voluntary service in the Waffen-SS. Walling enlisted as a 17-year-old recruit. At the end of the war, he was relieved of his oath as a flag officer. What he experienced afterwards as an interpreter and finally as a simple prisoner of war or internee with "his Yanks" is worth a few chapters of its own. But Walling's time with the Hitler Youth, his pre-military training in the military training camp and his combat missions in 1943 as a tank destroyer in the "Deutschland" regiment of the 2nd SS tank division "Das Reich" on the Eastern Front near Schitomir and in late 1944/early 1945 in East Prussia and finally in the Bavarian "Alpine Fortress" are not neglected either. Walling's memoirs are characterised by one thing in particular: they are thoroughly honest. The author doesn't gloss over anything, he doesn't make himself a hero retrospectively, he writes about the horrors of the war that many of his comrades didn't survive.
