Description
Günther Graichen was born on November 14, 1907 as the son of the farmer Guido Graichen and his wife Flora. Drafted into military service on December 4, 1940 (basic training in Küstrin/Oder), he went to Tripoli and the African desert as a driver in mid-February 1941. At the beginning of September 1941 he returned to Germany, soon to be set off on a horse-drawn transport towards the front in Russia.
On November 14th, 1942, his 35th birthday, Günther Graichen wrote his last letter from "Kalatsch am Don, where we are stationed" (stamped on November 17th, 1942). On November 23, 1942, the pincer arms of the Soviet tank formations met near Kalatsch. 260,000 men are surrounded. The twelve letters sent from home between November 10, 1942 and February 12, 1943 were returned marked "undeliverable". The Graichen family comes from the town of Oberdorf, which, along with its neighboring towns of Tettau and Wunschendorf, is located in today's Meerane-Schönberg administrative community. These are located in the extreme northwestern tip of the Zwickau district on the border with Thuringia in the state of Saxony. A densely populated area on the northwestern edge of the Erzgebirge Basin.
