The marches and battles of 1639/40 described in this book are not only from the point of view of the military, but also from the perspective of the population affected by them. For them, there was not much difference between their own troops, the enemy's troops or those of the allies. Many details of the incidents from all the areas crossed give a good picture of the behaviour of the soldateska, the general mood, the acquiescence and suffering of the population. It is also particularly easy to see how much tactical guidelines influenced the course of warlike events. Three armies, the Piccolominian from Luxembourg, the Weimar/French from Alsace and the Bavarian Imperial Armada marched towards the Rhine to Mainz. The amazing thing is, there were many small battles, but not the big battle expected by many people.
