Description
Mutual assaults and difficult negotiations, backstabbing and deceit, all this is found united in these accounts. After the Battle of Nördlingen, the great turning point in the Thirty Years' War, and the resulting temporary change in the balance of power, various princes and estates attempted to gain personal advantages from the changes. However, in the landscape covered in this book, from Mainz to Fulda and from Kassel to Würzburg, there was one troublemaker in 1634/38. This was the Swedish Major General Jacob Ramsay, who had occupied the fortress, city and county of Hanau since 1634 and had successfully defended it against all previous attacks. However, the main topic here is not so much the actual siege battles, but the difficult conditions in the surrounding area, which prevented a vigorous conquest of Hanau for a long time. The siege of Hanau is always present, however, as it was the dominant event during the period described. Many personal views and actions of the most important persons are described from a large number of files and underpinned with many original quotations.
