The Habsburg Monarchy usually remains on the margins of overviews of the Thirty Years' War - only at the beginning and towards the end of the war does it come more prominently into view. This volume begins with an overview of the events in the various countries of the Monarchy, which were affected very differently by the war and its consequences.
The contributions, which are followed by those on the Habsburgs as sovereigns and warlords, on war finances, various self-testimonies and on the culture of remembrance, make one thing clear above all: the Thirty Years' War had a much more profound influence on the lives of people in the Habsburg Monarchy than has often been assumed up to now. In addition to the direct consequences of the war, the quarterings, the oppressive tax burden or even the peasant unrest made themselves clearly felt in various parts of the Monarchy. Volume 73 of the series "Publications of the Institute for Austrian Historical Research".
