Description
The Thirty Years' War "up close", told from historical documents. The historical treatises on the Thirty Years' War have so far consisted mainly of grand narratives of political and military history. What is decidedly neglected in them, however, are the concrete experiences of violence, people's ways of coping with life and their memories, as well as their portrayal in the contemporary media.
Hans Medick's book brings new insights here.
In the form of a documentary micro-history, it presents life with violence in the Thirty Years' War. Numerous, partly unpublished self-testimonies and the emerging mass media of the time bring astonishing, even frightening findings to light. It is the experience of violence from the perspective of individual persons of all social classes, such as mercenaries and soldiers, peasants, burghers and nobles, that sheds new light on a complex warlike event context. In this way, Hans Medick not only makes the perceptions and processes of everyday warfare accessible, he also writes a new, historically and anthropologically grounded history of the Thirty Years' War.
