In 1988 Jan Peters discovers a diary-like manuscript of a mercenary from the Thirty Years' War. In 24 years he covered 22400 kilometres across Europe. But he revealed nothing about his name, age or origin. Researching his life is difficult: some things that are of interest today were not even recorded. Much was lost. Only a document in Mühlhausen, Thuringia, definitively clarifies the mercenary's name: Peter Hagendorf.
This volume contains the entire text of the diary. Observations on the writer's life, lifestyle and values place his life in the events of the time and provide access to the mercenary's everyday world. - Soberly and yet touchingly, this Peter Hagendorf describes his eventful military and family life. "An exciting authentic account of life and a unique one at that" (cit. Antje Zeiger, Museum des Dreißigjährigen Krieges, Wittstock).
