The building up of the Imperial Japanese Navy began during the 19th century after the opening of Japan towards the West. During the Pacific War in 1941, it was one of the strongest naval forces in the world, alongside the U.S. Navy and the British Royal Navy. This illustrated book presents her battleships, battlecruisers, aircraft carriers, heavy cruisers and destroyers from about 1920 until the Second World War. Numerous historical photographs, some of them full-page, with detailed captions in German/English, including aerial photographs taken by American reconnaissance aircraft, show the ships, their superstructures, their armament and crews during peacetime and wartime.

Illustrated crack drawings (general views and details) illustrate the construction of individual ships, while technical tables specially prepared for this volume provide information on construction data, special details and the fates of the vessels. The accompanying text, also completely in German and English, informs about the technical and operational history, conversions and modernisations. The graphic design and image processing of this volume with many previously unpublished photographs and brilliant crack drawings were created in the proven quality of Waldemar Trojca.
