Many Japanese aircraft carriers, whose names became world-famous through Pearl Harbor, were already involved in hostilities off the Chinese coast in 1937.

The book begins with the beginnings of Japanese naval aviation in World War I and reports on the construction of the large aircraft carriers and the first aircraft, mostly double- or triple-deckers.
