The war diaries of this division of the 32nd wave of formation have been burned or buried, as with all divisions that perished in the Kessel of Heiligenbeil. Because there were only a few survivors, not much is known about this large army unit, which only existed for six months. By chance, a detailed report on the fate of the division was recently found by the former regimental adjutant of the artillery regiment from 1962, addressed to a retired general whose son served and fell in this regiment. The author has expanded, supplemented and commented on this report.
The 349th Volksgrenadier Division was raised in East Prussia in September 1944 as the 32nd Welle Division, as a replacement for the 349th Infantry Division, which was destroyed in the Zloczow area of Army Group North Ukraine in July 1944. It existed for only seven months. The remnants were destroyed in the cauldron of Heiligenbeil. This book reports on the formation of this large unit of the Wehrmacht and describes the desperate defensive battles in East Prussia. A commanding officer's list and an outline of the units are in the appendix.
