Description
This is the third volume of a complete work on the deployment of the German 2nd Panzer Division in Normandy in 1944. The final act of this battle began on 13 August with the transfer of the 2nd Panzer Division from Alencon to Argentan. This retreat exhausted the men of the division. After briefly raising hopes as a result of a German counterattack, however, the 2nd Armoured Division soon found itself threatened with being trapped in the cauldron of Falaise-Argentan.
The 2nd Armoured Division's losses in the fighting along the banks of the Seine were high, but the armoured unit finally managed to break out of the cauldron and cross the river at the end of August. It began a slow retreat across France towards the German border for a unit in desperate need of replacement and rest due to its heavy losses in the Normandy battles. On more than 300 pages, the author describes in chronological order the events surrounding the German 2nd Panzer Division from the battles in the cauldron of Falaise to the retreat towards Rouen and the German border. The author uses a large number of rare and partly unpublished photos, eye-witness accounts and documents.
