Historical novel. Winter 1876. After the battle of the Little Bighorn River and the victory over General Custer, the Cheyenne have retreated to their winter camps as usual. Moekaé, a young woman, is also looking forward to the peace and quiet of winter. When bullets strike her tepee one morning, she begins a desperate escape. After heavy fighting, the Cheyenne are finally captured and deported to Indian territory. There they languish under terrible conditions. They are not used to the climate, and the food supplied is barely enough to alleviate the worst of their hunger. With a few determined people, Moekaé sets out to return to their ancestral home in the north...
In the middle of winter, the Cheyenne are so weakened that some of the people finally surrender at Fort Robinson after a hardscrabble journey. There, the situation worsens so much that the desperate people dare to escape, among them Moekaé. She is heavily pregnant when she is hit by a bullet in the middle of the snowstorm - for the soldiers and white settlers begin a merciless hunt for the hated Indians.
