It vividly records the first clash of completely foreign cultures, neither of which had any knowledge of the other's existence. The text thus marks the beginning of a centuries-long process of colonisation of the world, the effects of which are the subject of intense debate today under buzzwords such as "colonial legacy", "historical guilt" and "restitution". This volume presents the text of the manuscript and the Columbus letter for the first time in a completely new annotated translation from the Spanish. A critical introduction embeds the manuscript in its historical context. In addition, Stefan Rinke describes the history of transmission and reception over the centuries.
