In Destroyers at War, Admiral James L. Holloway III, the twentieth Chief of Naval Operations, recalls his early life and service on destroyers during the final battles of the Pacific War in World War II. As assistant gunnery officer on the USS Ringgold (DD 500) and gunnery officer on the USS Bennion (DD 665), he took part in coastal bombardment and anti-aircraft radar picket missions during the attacks on Saipan, Tinian, Peleliu and Leyte. He provides detailed explanations of how artillery systems work on small combat ships and offers thrilling accounts of combat operations, including the decisive battle in Surigao Straitthe last battle between battleships in historyin which a torpedo from the Bennion dealt a fatal blow to the Japanese battleship Yamashiro. The book also highlights the relationship between Holloway and his father, James L. Holloway Jr. the only father-son duo to serve as four-star admirals in active duty and highlights the career of the elder Holloway as his son worked his way through the ranks.
