888 days of war in the Karst in plans, maps and reports. In eleven battles, the armies of Italy and Austria-Hungary were pitted against each other in the Karst. The number of dead, wounded and prisoners reached the million mark without either side gaining more than a few handbreadths of ground. It was not until the 12th Battle of the Isonzo that Austria-Hungary, with the help of the German 14th Army, achieved a major breakthrough at Flitsch and Tolmein and advanced as far as the Piave. Italy lost around 400,000 men in this battle alone. The account traces the military events in broad strokes, incorporating the experiences of ordinary soldiers and the local population around the immediate battlefields. Richly illustrated, including numerous previously unpublished photographs as well as postcards and important documents.
