This study is a scientifically detailed account of the 12th Battle of the Isonzo, undoubtedly one of the most complex and demanding military operations in the First World War. German military strategists employed a new style of command and leadership - the so-called Auftragstaktik - in this offensive. In addition, there was a new strategy in the hitherto "static" mountain warfare as well as a new breakthrough tactic in which positions deep in the enemy's rear were to be quickly conquered.

The fighting is meticulously analysed, as are the reasons for the German-Austrian-Hungarian victory and the Italian defeat. In addition, the authors address new findings on the role of Erwin Rommel and some other German officers in the battle. Finally, the two authors also explain why the 12th Isonzooffensive was so significant for the development of military strategy.
