The memory of the First World War is still largely determined by the protracted positional battles and material battles in France and Belgium. However, this overlooks the fact that the First World War on the Eastern Front, in the Balkans, in the Near and Middle East, in Africa, as well as in its initial and final phases, even on the Western Front, was in part highly dynamic, with manoeuvre-rich operations.

"Beyond the material battles", this book therefore examines where, how and to what extent the First World War could be fought as a war of movement.
