Even before 1914, the Balkans were considered a region of conflict and a "powder keg of Europe". With the assassination in Sarajevo on 28 July 1914, a development began here that led directly to the First World War. The texts in this anthology paint a precise picture of the political situation in the Balkans between 1914 and 1918. They present the most important campaigns and fronts and at the same time convey an impression of the peculiarities of warfare, occupation rule and the mobilisation and involvement of the civilian population. Focusing on three main areas, the contributions document the connection between political decisions and military activities in the region, the relationship between civil society and war, and the question of perceptions and interpretations of the war events by contemporaries and posterity.
