The Middle East is one of the little-known theatres of the First World War. The Ottoman Empire, an ally of Germany and Austria, waged war against Russia from 1914 and brought the British to the brink of defeat. Because only a few Germans fought alongside the Turks, the Middle Eastern fronts are not as remembered as the war in the West. Yet even there, the fighting was extraordinarily violent.
Martin Kröger focuses on the events in those faraway places that are otherwise only treated in passing and shows how the Turkish defeat continues to shape the political fabric of the Middle East to this day. The series "Wars of the Modern Age", published by the Centre for Military History and Social Sciences of the German Armed Forces, presents the most important military conflicts of the 19th and 20th centuries according to the latest scientific findings and explains their historical causes and political consequences.
