Description
Volume 1 of the "Biographical Series on the Modern History of Austria". Between November 1918 and January 1920, 122 Volkswehr lieutenants were appointed in Austria. Their biographies and fates in the Monarchy, the First Republic and in the "Third Reich" up to the Second Republic are examined and evaluated in this volume on the basis of existing file material.
The question of officer replacements in the Volkswehr and the First Federal Army is also examined. A comprehensive appendix provides for the first time a complete list of all 1,228 lieutenants appointed between November 1918 and 1 April 1938, sorted both alphabetically and by year of retirement. This volume also contains the structure, deployment and staffing of the People's Armed Forces in the years from 1918 to 1920.
The young Republic of German Austria was exposed to multiple threats at the time of its founding in 1918. Successor states that had emerged from the demise of the Danube Monarchy made territorial demands on the external borders and internally there was the threat of the establishment of a soviet republic. Hundreds of thousands of returning soldiers tried to reach their home countries via Austrian territory. The provisional state government under State Chancellor Karl Renner saw itself forced to immediately install a militarily organised force of order to defend against these threats. A provisional German-Austrian armed force was set up under the name "Volkswehr". A key demand of the Social Democrats was the creation of a new republican-minded officer corps, which was to be largely drawn from the non-commissioned ranks. This created the institution of the "people's army lieutenant". About the complete work "Biographical Series on the Modern History of Austria": The volumes in this series are biographical reference works on selected military and civilian topics from modern Austrian history with a focus on the First Republic. Due to the long life spans of the persons included, the biographies cover a period extending from the last third of the 19th century over about 100 years to the last third of the 20th century. The biographies are largely based on official and official as well as archival sources from Austrian, German and American archives. Also included are diploma theses and dissertations at Austrian universities and the most recent secondary literature.
