The author looks at a topic that has long remained in the dark: the connection between the Italian Mafia and the Western Allies during the Second World War. Many myths circulate around this topic. For example, the founder of the American "Cosa Nostra", "Lucky" Luciano, is said to have entered Sicily in 1943 in American tanks bearing yellow flags with the letter "L", which supposedly symbolised Luciano's name. However, it is undisputed that the American secret service used the Mafia to track down German spies and saboteurs in New York harbour. Drawing on files and documents from American and British archives, the author attempts to uncover the truth and myth of the Allies' curious and momentous co-operation with the Mafia.
