A gripping account of the brutal intelligence war between Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia during World War II. The intelligence war between Germany and the Soviet Union, triggered by Operation Barbarossa on June 22, 1941, was fought fiercely for four years. Neither side was prepared for the scale of the conflict, and both quickly developed methods to assess and counter the military intentions of their adversary. This book examines the intelligence strategies of Stalin's SMERSH and Hitler's Abwehr. SMERSH coordinated three independent counterintelligence agencies within the Red Army, while Abwehr was Germany's military intelligence service. Focusing on key battles such as Stalingrad and Kursk, the book examines how both sides competed for intelligence advantages. The Soviets excelled at strategic deception and manipulated German decision-making. Early in the war, they used counterintelligence to deceive the Germans, particularly during their surprise counteroffensive in Moscow in December 1941 and their hidden tank formations in 1942. German intelligence chief Gehlen underestimated Soviet deception and overestimated German superiority, hindering effective analysis. Meanwhile, the Soviets deployed agents behind German lines and used terror tactics to disrupt German operations. The decisive battle of Stalingrad exposed the failings of German intelligence, and the ensuing losses marked a turning point. By the end of the war, Soviet counterintelligence had become a decisive weapon that reshaped the intelligence landscape and significantly influenced the outcome of the war.
