After Germany and the Soviet Union invaded Poland in 1939, both occupying powers carried out extensive deportations, affecting over 700,000 people. The forced resettlements were brutal and systematic often taking place in the middle of the night, with minimal luggage and in overcrowded freight cars. Despite superficial similarities, the deportations pursued different goals: while the Soviet Union sought complete Sovietization, the Nazi regime aimed to Germanize the territories. The work analyzes the justifications, organizational structures, and social consequences of these deportations, revealing similarities and differences as well as the central importance of resettlement policies for both regimes until June 1941.
