The 7th SS Mountain Volunteer Division "Prinz Eugen" was a mountain infantry unit of the Waffen-SS, comprised mainly of the Volksdeutsche (ethnic Germans from outside the Reich) from German-occupied Serbia, the Independent State of Croatia, Hungary, and Romania. Established in 1942, the division spent most of the war engaged in bitter combat against the Yugoslav Partisans. Notorious for the brutal treatment of its enemies, the 7th SS Mountain Volunteer Division "Prinz Eugen" committed several large-scale war crimes and atrocities over the civilian population of the areas it fought in. Alongside the Wehrmacht it participated in numerous German operations in that region of Europe, fighting in the harsh mountain terrain of the Balkans. In the late stages of the war it faced Bulgarian and Soviet forces, covering the retreat of German forces from Albania and Greece. This book tells the story of the unit from its formation to its final days, and is equipped with 834 exclusive photographs, most of which have never been published before. These rare photographs are a powerful visual testimony of war, allowing the reader to truly grasp the harsh reality of World War II in the Balkans. This book is both a meticulous analysis of the military operations the division participated in and a stunning photographic record, making it essential reading for anyone interested in one of the most notorious divisions of the Waffen-SS, and World War II in general.
These rare photos describe the harsh reality of war in the Balkans during the Second World War in a particularly vivid and clear way. The volume is both a meticulous analysis of the military operations in which the SS Mountain Division "Prinz Eugen" took part during the war and an impressive pictorial report on one of the most feared combat units of the German armed forces.
