Mainly American sources give a fascinating insight into what happened in North Thuringia in 1945
From the crossing of the Werra, fighting in the Mühlhausen-Langensalza area, advance into the lower Eichsfeld, the Hainleite and Kyffhäuser mountains to the Unstrut and Finne. Capture of Heiligenstadt, Sondershausen and Bad Frankenhausen by the Vth US Corps
This book is the first volume of a multi-part documentary series by the author dealing with the American occupation of Thuringia in
1945. Divided into the advance sections of the US Army Corps involved, the chronological course of the occupation is traced in detail for the first time from a military perspective and using American and German military documents as well as eyewitness accounts until the withdrawal of the American troops from Central Germany.
The first book provides an introductory description of the military situation at the end of March/beginning of April 1945 and the situation after the occupation of the Mühlhausen-Langensalza area by the 3rd US Army between 4 and 8 April 1945. Following on from this, the advance of the V. US Corps of the 1st US Army from the Kassel-Göttingen area through parts of the Eichsfeld, the Hainleite and the Kyffhäuser Mountains to the Unstrut and Finne rivers as well as the further advance to the Saale for the period 8-12 April 1945. The occupation of the towns of Sondershausen and Bad Frankenhausen is dealt with in detail. Finally
there is a brief consideration of the American occupation period until the withdrawal of the Americans and the incorporation of Thuringia into the Soviet occupation zone.
