The battle for the Saale crossings in Weissenfels and the last battles for the flak positions north of the city. In 2003, a small book volume entitled "The Town of Weissenfels in April 1945" was published in Weissenfels, which for the first time dealt with the events surrounding the capture of the town by the American 69th Infantry Division of the V. U.S. Corps of the 1st U.S. Army. On 12 April 1945, armoured units of the 9th U.S. Armoured Division of the V. U.S. Corps had reached the Saale between Merseburg and Weißenfels during their advance on Leipzig.

In the process, they had encountered blown-up bridges and resistance from the fire positions of the Central German anti-aircraft belt along the entire width. This was also the case in Weißenfels, where fighting broke out between the German defenders and the following American infantry between 12 and 16 April 1945. As a result of further research and eyewitness reports, the initially short documentation grew steadily over the years and formed the basis for further books in the current documentation series "The End of the War in Central Germany 1945". This book volume is intended to commemorate these beginnings on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the end of the war and at the same time to highlight the end of the war in the city of Weißenfels as an example of the senseless final battles of 1945.
