World War II had many theatres. Not least, it was fought in the colonies of the great European powers. In 1940, for example, Italy used its possessions in what is now Libya as a starting point to attack the British bases in Egypt. Germany came to Mussolini's aid, but Commonwealth troops from New Zealand, South Africa, India and Australia also took part. A more than three-year desert war ensued, which shaped national myths, especially around the two commanders Bernard Montgomery and Erwin Rommel, and created one or the other illusion.
The series "Wars of the Modern Age", published by the Centre for Military History and Social Sciences of the German Armed Forces, presents the most important military conflicts of the 19th and 20th centuries according to the latest scientific findings and explains their historical causes and political consequences.
