The Second World War was waged by the Wehrmacht as a criminal war of aggression, robbery and extermination. Adolf Hitler initiated his expansion and extermination plans with the army leadership at an early stage. The soldiers not only committed numerous war crimes, especially in Eastern Europe, they were also actively and knowingly involved in the Holocaust. Accordingly, German post-war society found it difficult to find a responsible way of dealing with the legacy of the Wehrmacht.
