Heinz Kühn planned a career as a municipal official after leaving school, but before that he had to do his compulsory military service. When he joined the Wehrmacht in autumn 1938, the clouds in the European political sky began to darken. Kühn could no longer control his own destiny; he was caught up in the maelstrom of events. In this book, Kühn recalls the most formative experiences from this time. They are the anecdotes of a tank destroyer from war and captivity.
He experienced his first wartime deployment during the Polish campaign. As a simple tank destroyer and gunner, he earned the EK II. After his promotion to corporal, he was quickly designated for the career of a reserve officer. Kühn experienced the beginning of the war against the Soviet Union as a lieutenant and platoon leader. This was followed by the advance and winter battles of 1941/42. After losing all his guns in infantry action and being awarded the EK I, his division was reorganised in France from the summer of 1942. Promoted to First Lieutenant, Kühn saw continuous action on the Eastern Front from January 1943 until the end of the war. From autumn 1943, he was a company commander, first equipped with anti-tank guns in the motorised platoon, later with the tank destroyer "Marder III" and finally with the fighter tank "Hetzer". In this position he experienced the defensive and retreat battles in the Ukraine, the Baltic States and the material battles in the Kurland Cauldron. At the end of the war he became a captain and was awarded the German Cross in Gold, but Kühn was taken prisoner by the Soviets for 3 1/2 years.
