Kampfgruppe Peiper was the spearhead of the 6th Panzer Army in the Ardennes, which was supposed to clear the way for the German tank advance to the Meuse and Antwerp. Equipped with enormous firepower, it gathered the most motivated veterans of the Third Reich. Joachim Peiper's unit had to advance without regard to its flanks and capture the bridges over the Meuse before the US Army could react.
After a difficult start, the German tank column broke through the GIs' defensive curtain and raced toward its objective. It had to cross the Ardennes, an easily defended area that the US command used to buy time. One bridge after another was blown up in front of Peiper's men. Running out of fuel, it came to a stop, isolated on a headland near La Gleize. Based on battle reports from both sides, this book analyzes events minute by minute and explains the reasons for Peiper's defeat, even though on paper he had all the cards in his hand to win.
