From the first advance on Warsaw in September 1939, German troops were involved in combat operations in urban areas without being prepared for their special requirements. After the invasion of the Soviet Union, it became clear that it would be impossible to control the occupied territory and secure supplies without mastering the urban intersections, which were often defended with the utmost determination by the Red Army. Using regulations, war diaries, field reports and many other sources, this book presents the development of German fighting in cities and its temporary successes up to the Battle of Stalingrad.
