Heinrich the Lion on his way to England in exile (1182). Before reaching the town of Bardowick, he is met with his last misfortune on German soil. The town is awarded to him, but closes the gates to the peacefully departing -and to crown the disloyalty, men and women squat on the ramparts and show their bare bottoms to the powerless ruler - truly no brightly polished mirrors. Her duke pauses, raises his fist and swears vengeance to the Bardowickers to remember. Prince Borwin, a blond slender Slav, takes the bow from his shoulder and speaks "May I try, lord?" The lion remembers Borwin's shooting skills and speaks, "Send one to his dark death without scratching his hide, and you may claim what you like!"... This historical scene is captured here in pewter figurines. Engraving: Lecke (Text from: Werner Jansen, Henry the Lion)
