Construction site / building site. Suitable for respective European cities and villages. Medieval workers building houses.
Around 1150
Our series shows the hustle and bustle on the site of a medieval castle. The gentleman - perhaps Margrave Albrecht (Albrecht the Bear) - overlooks the hustle and bustle while his brushwoods secure at a respectful distance.
The population of the villages belonging to the castle has been brought in for simple work and auxiliary services, while the specialized builders of a "construction hut" go about their craft. Large loads are lifted with a winch, earth and mortar are carried in vats on carrying boards. Carpenters build scaffolding and saw beams for roof structures, false ceilings and wooden battlements. Brick bakers produce mud bricks, stonemasons hew the stones for the arched windows and gate frames, blacksmiths repair and sharpen the tools. Builders get their wages. Instead of lists or papers, notched timbers serve as proof of the day's work. (A notched wood is a longitudinally split bar. Both halves are provided with the personal mark and are joined together during the evening notching. The notch creates a very simple form of double-entry bookkeeping.)
